The Logo

The logo represents Anti-Colonial by Nature—a striking, evocative, creative and connected multimedia designer and agitator focused on amplifying anti-colonial action and the practice of interdependence—the balanced interconnection of self with community, land, water, air, plant and animal kin.

ANTI-COLONIAL BY NATURE refers to the way that ecological systems are anti-colonial by the very essence of their being in sacred kinship to one another. The existence of all non-human life inherently resists the colonial destruction of life. Think mycelium and those rowdy killer whales.

Turtle

A drawing of a Rio Grande Cooter, native to the Rio Grande Watershed, this turtle defied colonial borders by swimming up and down the Rio Grande, much like my ancestors did.

Flower

The flower represent a connection to the earth and an undeniable interconnectedness to all life.

“A”

The “A”, typically encased in a circle, is enclosed within the turtle shell, represents the Anarchist philosophy.

Sipapu (+)

The portal through which ancient Puebloan ancestors first emerged into the present world.

Logo concept and design originated from a Community Defense program I directed in 2021. I decided to scrap the logo then because it had not received the feedback I had anticipated. The logo came back to life in the winter of 2023 and blossomed to fruition in early January of 2024.

  • The artwork is a collection of digital collages that use a variety of images, striking color palettes, and eye-catching designs. The pieces use action oriented imagery and historical symbolism to communicate messages of revolution and resistance. Social movements are illustrated through these digital collages and viewers are engaged with a message that strikes in them the power to take action.

This style of creation is heavily influenced by ancestral forms of agitprop utilized as an art form in resistance to colonialism, racial capitalism, and white supremacy. The process collages together the knowledge of liberation movements with iconographic symbolism, culturally significant color palettes, and sharp revolutionary slogans.

  • Anti-Colonial by Nature (ACBN) uses visual art, messaging, and political education to translate complex concepts into accessible sources of knowledge from which community can build power. ACBN develops communications strategies that build upon organizing histories to further elevate present day local and national movement messaging. ACBN provides free art and organizing tools to the public to eliminate financial barriers that restrict access to expression and education. Anti-Colonial by Nature provides compensated services to organizations seeking graphic design and communications support.

  • Interdependence - Interdependence is a practice through which we can build community capacity and collective power. Relationship building over time fosters trust and mutual reciprocation in the form of knowledge and skill sharing, intimacy, care, and resource building. When we develop skills to support one another the state becomes obsolete.

Kinship - our responsibility toward ourselves, our community, the land, water, animal kin, including animate and inanimate beings, and so on. Kinship is how we build and maintain balanced relationships with our environment through vulnerability, trust, and reciprocity.
